The Inn at Monticello, our bed and breakfast in Charlottesville, Virginia, carries on a tradition of gracious southern hospitality on 5 wooded acres, with mature trees shading the house, and a pristine creek running through the stately grounds.

The Inn has five guestrooms, all with private baths, and a separate cottage that is sometimes available for guests. Several rooms have fireplaces or private porches. All are decorated with antique or reproduction furniture from the colonial or Victorian eras. In the fall and winter, guests often enjoy a glass of wine by the hearth in the living room. In the spring and summer, they love to sit on the front porch while being entertained by the birds and the deer.

Breakfast at the Inn at Monticello is a celebration of fine food and great company. We serve a full gourmet breakfast each morning, with guests seated like family around the dining table. We offer beverages in the afternoon, and homemade cookies or brownies in the evening.

Although guests can enjoy the peace and quiet of our award-winning Charlottesville, VA bed and breakfast inn, most choose to take advantage of our convenient location to explore some of the natural and historic sites that are located nearby. We are situated just five minutes from Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, and Ashlawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe; and less than 10 minutes from historic downtown Charlottesville's pedestrian mall, and the University of Virginia. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and more than 20 Virginia wineries are within 30 minutes, including Jefferson Vineyards, where our nation's third president, the "Father of American Wine," first tried his hand at viniculture. See why Life Magazine, Drinks Magazine and National Geographic Explorer magazine named the Inn at Monticello as the perfect place to stay when visiting Virginia wineries, or when taking the journey through hallowed ground.

The Inn at Monticello is also located in the midst of a thriving performing and culinary arts community. The Paramount Theater and the Charlottesville Pavilion, located on the downtown pedestrian mall, and the John Paul Jones Arena, located on the grounds of the University of Virginia, offer headliner entertainment throughout the year. There are more than 50 great restaurants located with a 10-minute drive of the Inn, offering traditional and internationally-inspired foods.

Come and stay with us and see why Frommer's and Cities Ranked & Rated recently named Charlottesville as the #1 city in which to live, and why Money magazine and Relocate America identified it as a great place to relocate.

For your comfort and convenience, the Inn at Monticello is centrally heated and air-conditioned, and we offer secure wireless high-speed Internet connections.

Throughout the mid-Atlantic, we are known for our gracious hospitality and service. As Thomas Jefferson said in 1816, "You know our practice of placing our guests at their ease."

What's New This Year?

We're already through 1/8 of the New Year, and there are lots of developments at the Inn.

Some of you may remember Rudy, our Norwich terrier.  He passed away last November, after a brief illness.  Rudy was very popular with our guests -- he received fan mail and it seemed like everyone wanted to have a picture taken with him.  He had his own Facebook page.

Well, we recently got a young rescue dog, Mikey, who is mostly Cairn terrier and the rest who-knows-what.  Mikey comes to us from Tennessee.  He's lovable, like Rudy, and likes to have his head scratched.  His tail is always wagging.

In keeping with our love of early American history, we're going to rename some of our rooms after the first 5 U. S. Presidents and their families.  We will dub the Yellow Room the new "Adams Room" after John and Abigail Adams.  Those of you who saw the HBO series "John Adams" starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney remember President Adams "sunny" personality, so the Yellow Room seems like a fitting place to honor the 2nd President and First Lady.  The Lilac Room will be renamed the "Madison Room" after James and Dolley; the Blue Room will become the "Washington Room" after George and Martha; and the Green Room will be the "Monroe Room" after James and Elizabeth.  Of course, the Jefferson Room will remain named after Thomas Jefferson.  Some of the rooms will also undergo some decorating and furniture changes.

In the past year, we've also focused on improving our gardens and grounds.  We repaired and upgraded our bridge.  We planted hundreds of bulbs that will be making their debut in the coming months.  We continued clearing some of the remaining small trees, limbs and vines from our property.  We finished putting in some garden beds around the new front walkway and front yard.  When the weather warms, we'll be planting some colorful perennials and annuals there.  This spring, summer and fall, it should be most pleasant sitting on our front porch with a glass of wine, taking in the views.

Speaking of wine, there are now more than 25 wineries nearby, and it's fun to check out some of the newcomers, such as Reynard Florence, located near Barboursville in Orange County.  Our VinnMont Wine Tours took some guests there for a Mardi Gras celebration.  Owners Roe and Dee Allison were busy pouring wine and making authentic beignets, while visitors enjoyed live music and picnic lunches.  Expect a lot more vineyards and micro-breweries to schedule similar festivities as the weather warms. We hope you'll have a chance to enjoy some of them.

See you soon!
